Editorial Review:
Book Description: Interest on the subjects of mind, consciousness and life is growing exponentially, and is affecting a growing number of disciplines. What used to be the exclusive domain of philosophical speculation is now part of scientific research conducted by neurologists, biologists, physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, archeologists, anthropologists and psychologists. This book provides an overview for ordinary humans of one of the most exciting fields of study of our days. It offers a survey of the philosophical mind-body debate, of neurological models of the brain, of computational theories of cognition (Artificial Intelligence, Connectionism, Cybernetics), of post-Darwinian biology, of theories on memory, reasoning, learning, emotions, common sense, dreams, language, metaphor, and, last but not least, consciousness itself.
The book offers a fascinating journey around the world of the scientific ideas that are likely to shape the intellectual scenario of the third millennium.

Thank you for all the readers who took the time to post a review (critics always welcome!)
I just wanted to say that the book is now out of print. A new edition is coming out, titled "The Nature of Consciousness", that includes 95% of the text of "Thinking About Thought" plus new texts written since 2003. And hopefully corrects all the typos that were in the first edition.
Unfortunately, an alphabetical index is beyond my cognitive closure
(read the book to find out what a "cognitive ... Read More

Finally. I've been looking for this kind of broad survey of cognitive science since i took my first AI class. This has it all: Chomsky, Damasio, Edelman, you name it. Even physicists like Penrose and philosophers like Searle. Basically 600 books
packed in 600 pages.
Not as easy to read as the author advertises it, but, again, a lot
easier to read than 600 books...

I found this book disappointing. It has no index, is loaded with typos and other errors, and the layout of the references at the end of each chapter is like a high school term paper. At a higher level, the book does marginally better. I understand that the author intends only to give an overview but the book is so disjointed and the coverage so shallow that it is difficult to gain much of real value. The author's approach seems to be to briefly state (and sometimes misstate) the views of theorists without ... Read More

Smoothly written for a great read in terms of coverage on the topic of Artificial Intelligence and the Human Thought process. Mr. Scaruffi has performed an exhaustive amount of research which adds insight and support for the topics discussed in each chapter.
Pick it up!!!
