D. Jaeger's review inspired me to move ahead with the purchase of this book. I am partial to trying something when someone who has given it an honest try can point to concrete results in his analysis! I read somewhere that Joe Morello is a practicer. He believes in practicing as an art form unto itself. I was glad to read that since I am woodshedding like I've never woodshedded in my life, thus on the lookout for whatever methods will help me get better. In response to review #1 who found this book useless, let it be known, this book, if used correctly, is THE BEST INDEPENDENCE book I've found on the subject. This is not a "open to a page and play the groove" kinda book, one can spend a lifetime working through the millions of options and patterns, mixing things up and improving your skills. This is definitely a book you have to work at, and take small sections and practice, practice, practice...but if you do, you will be a much better player! ... Read More

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. Comparing this book to Chapin's classic is a joke. "Warm ups" are the same as the "patterns" section. There is no "meat" in this book. Not until page 45 does the book change it up with some trip patterns. Even the intermediate level percussionist will be extremely bored by this book.

This is book is very good as long as the exercises within are understood to be a means to an end and not the end itself. You won't be learning licks or musicality with this book, but rather developing the coordination to create your own. It is a TECHNIQUE book and not an "practice-this-lick" book. The underlying concept is to develop your ability to execute any combination with any limb at any time and understand how differing rhythms work with and against each other.
